Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) have been practicing in Alaska since 1969.
There are approximately 40 CNMs currently in Alaska. We provide care in Anchorage, Bethel, Fairbanks, Homer, Soldotna, Ketchikan,
Juneau, and Wasilla.
Certified nurse-midwives in Alaska practice in a variety of settings including private and
public hospitals, birth centers, private practices with physicians, and also independent private practices. CNMs do
direct client care, work as consultants, and as educators.
Certified nurse-midwives are known to provide care to women during pregnancy,
delivery, and postpartum. But they also offer primary care, gynecologic care, family planning, and preconception care
and counseling. Nurse-midwives are client advocates who promote choices in childbirth and self care in all areas of
health for women.
