Most all insurance companies cover care provided by nurse-midwives.  Nurse-midwives are also covered by Medicaid, and in many cases, by Medicare.  Some of the nurse-midwives offer sliding scale for self-pay clients.  So, no matter what payment plan you fall under, most any woman can use a nurse-midwife for the majority of her health care needs.

Free Consults

Most nurse-midwives offer a free maternity consultation visit.  This is a visit for you and your partner (or whomever you choose), to meet with the nurse-midwife to discuss what services she offers, and ask any questions you may have concerning your pregnancy and your plans for your labor and delivery.  This is a good time to interview the nurse-midwives available to find out which one would most suit your needs.
